Whether Don obtained a list of potential clients from someone else, a list that he had been building over the years or some of his clients is not too important, because ultimately everything we receive is from God. Bearing that it in mind, Don, went above and beyond what is expected of most people today, in assisting Lori in the early stages of her practice. By gifting her a list of potential clients, he followed the instructions in Hebrews 13:16 (New Living Translation) which tells us, “And don’t forget to do good and to share with those in need. These are the sacrifices that please God.” Helping others in need is a great way to honor our Lord.

Now, in turn, Lori returning the favor by gifting Don a car also reflects what the Scripture teaches us about helping others. Luke 6:38 (NLT),Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back.” I am not implying that when we give we will always receive something back in monetary value, but the joy we feel in helping others and in giving is something that we can always look forward too.

Since this gift was within the confines of a business relation, the gifted car is considered income. Therefore, Don will have to report the $40,000 as income, and it appears that Don is a man of honor and will report the extra income. Even though the car is a gift from Lori, it ultimately came from the Lord as with everything else we have or receive and Don will have to pay taxes on the extra income.

Romans chapter thirteen reminds us that we are all subject to governing authorities, which includes paying our taxes. Furthermore, resisting the authorities are resisting the servants that God put in charge. Romans 13:6-7 (NLT) tells us, “For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing. Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.”
