Do anybody have PSYC 354 EXCEL homework week 1
PSYC 354 Excel Homework 1 & Data Set 1: (35 pts possible) The objective of your first Excel assignment is to learn to enter data in a worksheet and become familiar with the basic functions of Microsoft Excel. First, be sure you view the presentations for this week, found in the Reading & Study folder for Module/Week 1. These presentations provide information and go through the steps you will need to be familiar with in order to complete this assignment. Below, you will find a basic table of different types of raw data for each of 8 imaginary college students (abbreviated “St.”) who are enrolled in an introductory psychology course. You will use the data in this table to complete your first Excel homework assignment. After reviewing the table, open a blank workbook in Microsoft Excel on your computer and follow the instructions found after the data set below. St. 1 St. 2 St. 3 St. 4 St. 5 St. 6 St. 7 St. 8 Gender Date of Birth 2/5/1992 9/16/1993 10/2/1990 8/4/1990 4/30/1991 3/7/1993 9/23/1987 3/8/1992 Year in School Sophomore Freshman Senior Senior Junior Freshman Sophomore Freshman GPA 3.89 2.54 3.17 2.90 3.61 3.22 2.76 3.31 Class Ranking 185 65 102 38 59 163 51 Quiz 1 95 51 76 84.5 62.5 97 77.5 89 Exam 1 91 82.5 95 73 88 91.5 42 79 Times Visited Advising Office Set up your columns: Starting with Column B, label the columns of your Excel worksheet with the variable names that are listed on the left side of the data table above. (Label Column B Gender, Column C Date of Birth, and so on.). Now set up your rows: Starting with Row 2, enter the student number (1, 2, 3…), one number per row. (You can practice using the Fill Handle here!) You will see that we are essentially rotating the above data table 90 degrees as we enter it into Excel. You will recall from the presentation that this is a typical method for setting up data—putting variables in the columns, and putting the individual cases (participants, students, research subjects, etc.) in the rows. Fill in the spreadsheet: Enter the raw data values from the set above into your Excel spreadsheet, putting each entry into the appropriate column and row. Remember that you can resize the width of your columns if necessary. Practice using a formula: Using one of the methods covered in the presentation, record the sum of the variable “Times Visited Advising Office” at the bottom of its respective column. After you have finished this step, the formula should show up in the Formula Bar when you click on the cell that contains the sum. Save the completed file to your computer as “yourname_Excel1.xls”. (Correct data entry for 1-4 above = 10 pts) Now let’s apply some things we’ve learned from our studies this week: In the rows beneath the spreadsheet you have created in Excel, number and answer the following questions about this week’s data set: Name one qualitative variable and one quantitative variable. Be sure you note which is which in your answer. (5 pts) Is the quantitative variable you listed in question a. discrete or continuous? (5 pts) Name one nominal variable, one ordinal, one interval, and one ratio variable. Be sure you note which is which in your answer. (5 pts) The professor who teaches this course decides to change the way gender is entered into the table in order to speed up the data entry process. She codes “M” as 1 and “F” as 2. Does her action change the level of measurement of the variable “Gender” or not? Why or why not? (5 pts) Formulate two questions you could answer using this data set. They can be simple questions. (5 pts) Save the file again! Your finished Excel Worksheet, including data and the answers to the above questions, should be submitted 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Monday of Module/Week 1. Page 3 of 3
