*Do not complete this SWA in a traditional essay format with topical paragraphs. Devote separate paragraphs to answering the the following questions for the three ads you choose. All other formatting requirements (font, etc) still apply.
To complete this SWA, go to Duke University’s digital collection of 20th-century advertisements (https://repository.duke.edu/dc/adaccess (链接到外部网站。)) and search by date for ads produced in the 1910s and 1920s.
Choose 3 ads and answer the following questions about each one. Identify the ad you are analyzing with its Title, Date, and Identifier number (all this is listed under the image of the ad).
- What is this ad selling and who is its intended buyer?
- What kinds of messages does this ad use to tempt consumers? In other words, is this ad selling more than a product (an idea, an image, an ideal, etc)? In answering this question, be specific about the images and words used in the advertisement.
Respond to this question based on your overall research in the ad database.
What can advertisements help you understand about the social, cultural, and economic world of the 1910s and 1920s? Based on your research on the Duke University database, what kinds of products were becoming popular and what kinds of advertising appeals were made and to whom? What can you learn about these decades as a whole based solely on these advertisements?
