Introduction to Sociology Family Budget Exercise

Imagine you are a single parent with two children. Your little girl is one year old, while your son is 7 years old. Assuming you have NO public assistance* what type of budget could you develop to ensure that your family will have their basic needs met? What do you need to survive and provide for your children (i.e. not going on extravagant vacations, but meeting basic needs)? 

Develop your budget estimates on the average cost of t hese items based on either your own experiences, the experiences of friends or family, or general knowledge about these particular expenses in your given geographic area. If you have nothing personal to base this information on, try this site for cost of living averages: http://livingwage.mit.edu/. Develop an estimate of the monthly and yearly expenses this family will need in order to meet basic needs. 

*NOTE: Public assistance (and even many public insurance programs) programs are often based on income, geographic region, and other variables. In this budget exercise scenario, you do not know this family’s income so you cannot determine public assistance.
