Introduction
Netflix is a company that has been a powerhouse in its field since the company started. Providing easier access to receive and watch movies in a way that was unheard of at the time of its conception. Competing with big businesses like Blockbuster as well as local movie rental companies. Starting with at home delivery of movies through the mail buy ordering online. Later moving to subscriptions even partnering with Disney in later years. Now offering personal recommendations to their viewers. We would like to take Netflix even farther in the future by offering a way that can connect families with a different viewing experience. So, no matter how far away a loved one is they can enjoy the experience together from the comfort of their own homes.
Background
Founded in 1997, Netflix offers online movie rentals of less than 1,000 titles. Switching to a subscription model, in 2000, Netflix introduced a personalized movie recommendation system. By 2005, Netflix subscribers exceeded 4.2 million and began developing video recommendation algorithms. Finally, in 2007, Netflix started producing streaming services and original content. As of 2016, he has over 50 million Netflix subscribers. The story continues today with a global presence in the video-on-demand industry. Netflix’s marketing strategy is undoubtedly a guide for digital marketers worldwide. Knowing this digital media streaming company is above all others on the market is a learning experience.
Netflix’s target market is young, tech-savvy users and anyone with a digital connection. Netflix viewers come from different age groups and demographics. However, most viewers are his teens, college students, entrepreneurs, professionals, etc. Netflix is aggressively expanding and personalizing content to grow its user base. They separate the audience from children and adults based on maturity. Netflix is a splendid example of an integrated marketing strategy. Integrated, agile, and client-focused for maximum impact. Netflix follows a customer-centric model to provide a seamless experience. The platform follows integrated marketing for effective targeting and optimizes content marketing for data analysis
Innovation Opportunity
With consideration of Netflix’s technological solutions, the streaming mogul still has new innovations in which they can employ for an enhanced user experience. The innovation we are presenting is one of group streaming embedded within Netflix. With this innovation, individuals can open watch rooms in which they can invite other subscribers to join, and everyone watches the same content at the same time. The invite can be shared in diverse ways such as email or in app invite; individuals can look up fellow subscribers by username, email, phone number of some other personal identifier. This innovation can also allow for customization of controls set by the session host. The host, when inviting everyone can customize which controls, they each hold, such as pause/play and fast-forward/backward. The host control or “ball” can be passed between those in the group session if an individual wants to take control. These sessions allow friends and family to connect with each other from anywhere in the world, whether that be different households or even different countries. When first rolling out this innovation, Netflix can begin locally, only allowing group sessions with US IP addresses. If this proves a success, Netflix can open worldwide, allowing for content from other countries to be available.
With Netflix’s competitive marketing strategy, the company could use this innovation as a leading initiative to bring in new subscribers as well as maintain their current subscriber base. With Netflix potentially increasing rates after the new year, introducing this new component to the streaming service could give existing subscribers the initiative to remain loyal to the company; it would allow them something new to explore and utilize. Though this concept may already have its own platform, Netflix can embed it into its streaming services so that customers do not need to rely on a third party with their personal information. As Netflix currently tailors content customized to its users, they can employ the same idea with group sessions, saving groups and creating a history and suggestions for the next time the group begins a new session; this way individuals do not need to trust an outside third party with saving their personal data. Netflix could advertise keeping their users’ personal data secure as an additional marketing point to reaffirm customer’s trust in the company.
Technology Integration
When we look at the way the technology of this innovation will be introduced, it starts with a beta test in which Netflix will release this new modernism to subscribers only in the United States. Netflix can release this as a separate add-on service at a slightly extra cost or can include it in all subscriptions with the upcharge integrated into the current subscription pricing. Marketing will subsequently soon follow in which Netflix can depict a group of friends or family in different households, cities, and states all turning on their TVs at the same time and dialing into the group session. From here the marketing campaign will show the features group sessions have to offer.
How the technology will function starts with the group session leader. This individual will log into their Netflix account and move over to the menu that houses the search function, home tab, categories, etc. In this menu, there will be an option for “group sessions.” When the individual selects this option, the screen will then give the options to “join a session” or “host a session.” Both options will have a classic Netflix animation to make choosing either option look appealing to the user’s eye.
When the individual chooses to “host a session” they will then be brought to a screen much like the home screen in which they can choose which program they would like to watch. There will be options similar to the home screen in which the selections will be categorized by genre, popularity, recommendations, etc. Once the host has selected a tv show or movie, they will be brought to a screen that will ask who they want to join the session. Here, they will choose to search by any type of personal identifiers in which can include phone number, email address, or username. The host will also have the option to link their Netflix account with social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and TikTok, in which they can invite friends and family through those synced contacts. From here, as the host invites those they wish to join, the host can implement certain controls for each member. These controls will range from volume control to play/pause to cohosting, or they can elect to not assign any controls at all and only allow viewing privileges. Once the TV show or movie has begun, a chat window will open on the screen; this chat can be utilized by users to communicate throughout the viewing without having to disrupt the program. This chat will have the option to be minimized so it does not impede on viewing quality. These sessions will have the option for only the host to enable chat or not, as well as if cameras and microphones will be allowed to be on during the sessions. Therefore, if the host allows cameras to be on while watching, the individuals will have the option to use their cameras or not; however, if the host declares cameras will not be allowed, the individuals will not be able to turn on their cameras. The host will also have the option to open a public group session in which anyone can join. Once a session is over, the host can elect to end the session or continue with another program.
When the individual chooses the “join a session” option, they will then again see the typical options such as genres, popularity, recommendations, etc. However, with this option they will also be able to see what sessions have already begun, whether that be by friend group or public sessions. Viewers will also be able to search for specific TV shows or movies and see if anyone is hosting a session with that program; if there is a public session, they are welcome to join at any point. Similarly, any individual will be able to leave a session at any time, however, they will need to be invited back into a private session by the host. Once in a session, the viewer will have the option to turn on their camera—if they have one—so as everyone in the group can see each other’s reactions to what they are watching. The viewer will also have the option to minimize those who have cameras one, similar to the chat feature, so as to not impede on their viewing experience.
An additional feature that will come with this innovation, is the option to create “watch groups” in which people can create a group and add individuals into said group. When creating these watch groups, the group organizer will have the option to choose which controls each individual receives as they are adding them, subsequently saving the watch group and all its settings of which will make beginning group sessions a much quicker process. In the same vein, people will have the option to “favorite” individuals for easy communication and access. These “favorites” and groups will be displayed at the top of the group session hope page for easy access. Netflix overtime will personalize these group session home pages in the same way the individual profiles are personalized, saving which genres the group sessions watch most and showing recommendations upon logon; there will always be something new.
This innovation will open up to many more possibilities in which Netflix can add to the streaming platform. The technology, system and components to make this innovation a success is all within the company itself, in which those in the technology department will be able to write the code that will bring this innovation to life. Netflix can partner with other social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram to bring users into the experience. Once Netflix sees this innovation take hold of the users in the United States, the company will then take it out of beta and distribute it to the rest of its worldwide viewer. From here, users will be able to interact with anyone from around the world. People in different countries will be able to host and join session from anywhere, allowing them access to Netflix’s worldwide archive. Someone in Canada will be able to watch programs only available in England simply by joining a group session. Worldwide connection and viewing can also be monetized, available at a higher cost. There are endless possibilities in which Netflix can expand this world of group session and unite the people together.
Operational Environment
Product or Solution Scenario as Exemplified by Customer or End-User Population to be Served:
The population this innovation will serve is the tech-savvy market, the younger generation that utilizes the more complex aspects of the technological advancements around them. From their point of view, this innovation will introduce a new social network with a multitude of options for customization for each group session, an aspect of technology this target market seeks out. For those primarily using this service, it will allow for a more interconnected user experience. They might develop the option to invite individuals who share common interests, introducing individuals to new people to develop acquaintances potentially. This avenue of social networking can lead to interpersonal connections across the globe where people can come together.
In this society where personal connections between individuals have declined, introducing a new type of social network can spark the need and desire for these lost connections. If this innovation were to develop within Netflix’s streaming services successfully, the company would be gearing its efforts toward this user population due to these needs the target market is so desperately lacking. Once an individual logs into the service, he/she can invite whomever they wish, select to join an open session, or host an open session for anyone to join. These open sessions can be suggested by common interests or searched by genre. These customizable options will draw a market of tech-savvy customers, demonstrating how Netflix is keeping up with technological advancements and remaining competitive in the streaming market. The target population will receive this competitive nature the innovation will serve and draw in more users.
Improvement of Operational Environment Characteristics:
Netflix can increase its market operations by dealing with assessment metrics that indicate that global expansion was Netflix’s main problem due to the language barrier that existed between Netflix and its international audience. Language is effective when it gets performed in different countries, all with a large audience. There can be detrimental outcomes to the profitability of Netflix since customer satisfaction is only guaranteed with language capability. The technique of providing the global audience with content was further affected due to varying subscription methods. Netflix attempted to deal with this issue by collaborating with local content companies, yet the concept was costly.
Competition is another case that suggests global expansion was Netflix’s issue since there are already local content providers available. This is detrimental to Netflix as an operational environment with profitable operations is possible when dealing with adequate adherence to client requirements. An advanced operational environment is possible using internet connectivity requirements to allow clients to watch Netflix content. Enabling internet operations to perform in various local areas is a reliable structure that can facilitate advanced outcomes that benefit the Netflix global audience. It is possible to improve connection to local companies as a method that Netflix can use to promote the adoption of its content. A feasible global licensing process can enhance the possibility of gaining more clients.
The best operational environment process is to ensure Netflix creates an effective change management tactic for dealing with the issues discussed. The fact that the company started creating blockbuster movies and shows booted its international adoption. As such, the best possible outcome is ensuring adherence to all international standards without incurring costs for the company. Global expansion while collaborating with local content creators is effective since it is the process that can produce profitable costs to implement. Owning rights to exclusive content is effective since it would allow Netflix to gain more profits when it owns all content. The fact that the shows on Netflix have been successful boosts the acceptance of the company’s content. This is imperative for further adoption of the exclusive content strategy.
Why it Should be Embraced and/or Funded
The reason that we are trying to implement this project is to not only generate a high number of viewers. It also allows our views to feel more connect to family and friends that might live states away. It also allows us to partner up with big social media companies that can open more doors for Netflix in the future. It will also allow Netflix to reach a different demographic of users. Gaining a record number of sales and new subscriptions because it gives more options for the users.
· High number of viewers.
· Partnering up with social media platforms.
· High demographic of people.
· Provides the need of being closer to others.
· Record sales potential.
· New subscription packages.
S ummary
As a result, Netflix serves as a unique example and source of inspiration for many other businesses. They have done an excellent job in content, branding, business model, and product. In addition, market enthusiasts and students can benefit from Netflix’s marketing strategy. Adding a new dimension to its technological innovations, Netflix is leading the streaming industry in new business technology integration. With the release of these new suggested innovations, no matter what the distance is people will still feel like they are in the same room. With the ability to chat and watch each other’s reactions within the chat group option. It brings a whole new term to movie night, it connects families, friends, and communities.
Along with the ability to also connect with social media sites like Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter. It will open new doors for Netflix in a way that many may have not thought of for a new generation of streaming and business profits through technology integration. Opening doors to new projects that will mutually benefit by integrating newer technological advancements as they are discovered in the future.
