The “blind window” metaphor that Dilthey developed was his approach to examining the occurrence of misinterpreting written text as a result of individual predilection. Dilthey suggests that humans understand and process things from a personal basis, and these beliefs serve as a reflection of their lessened or increased interests and perspectives (Dilthey & Jameson, 1972). Dilthey emphasized this point as a conveyance of introspective reality from the observer (Dilthey & Jameson, 1972). In regards to articulating knowledge and data; connotation, recollection, cognizance, and lucidity are all factors that Dilthey described as historically acclimatized (Throop, 2003), thus providing significant and applicable explanation for the way the human mind construes information strictly founded on factors that are one-sidedly imperative to them. The “blind window” course occurs commonly in our daily lives. For instance, in my profession as a therapist, I work to interpret reported patient information in order to employ the most effective intervention. If I am not functioning from an objective standpoint and observant of other non-verbal cues and the potential of underlying information, I am at risk for allowing my own personal biases to creep in and distort my view and interpretation of their presenting concerns.
