THIS IS ONLY AN INTERPRETATION, FIVE SENTENCES AND A QUESTION IS ALL I NEED. TELL ME YOUR THOUGHTS, HAVE REFERENCES! ASK PROBING QUESTIONS AND MAKE STATEMENTS BASED OFF WHAT THEY WROTE

Investigative interviews are used to gather facts about occurrences/incidents, to attempt to decrease possible confusion of ongoing investigations by maintaining confidentiality as much as possible, and to uncover the truth.

Interview

For this discussion question, I chose the second interview regarding Tammy Myers, a United States Secret Service Special Agent, and Victoria Council, representing the United States Attorney’s office. The purpose of this interview was to obtain Special Agent Myers’ personal story/narrative of a suspect she shot while executing an arrest warrant. Though Special Agent Myers’ seemed confident in her responses, some questions asked did not completely allow her to provide much detail.

Strengths and Limitations

The interview process seemed to be a combination of a structured interview, cognitive interview, and an inferential interview, which can have both strengths and limitations. Structured interviews “maximize recall and minimize contamination” by allowing the person being interviewed to provide a narrative of their own experience as well as being asked specific questions. Cognitive interviews rely on memory of the actual scene, specific incidents that occurred, and/or other information that is needed. Inferential interviews focus on honesty and asked yes or no questions to try to detect deception.

Strengths in the interview:

  • The interview was more of an informal interview, which allows the interviewee to be more open and honest.
  • Special Agent Myers’ could tell her story.
  • Special Agent Myers’ attitude reflected confidence.
  • Victoria Council could change or direct the questions in an unspecified order.
  • Victoria Council asked open-ended questions for clarification.

Limitations in the interview:

  • When asked about her injuries, Special Agent Myers’ was not asked in a way for her to elaborate too much.
  • I feel Victoria Council could have asked the question regarding the difficulty of killing someone a little different.
  • Though the interview pertained to an incident which occurred October 10, it was unclear as to the length of time between the incident and the interview.
  • Victoria Council made it seem like Special Agent Myers’ was a “killer” by asking “Agent, at what point did you mortally would Mr. Pilvin?”. I think this question could have been asked differently.
