Charles Wright Mills (August 28, 1916 – March 20, 1962) was an American sociologist, and a professor of sociology at Columbia University from 1946 until his death in 1962. His concept of the Sociological Imagination (1959), describes a mindset for studying sociology — the sociological imagination — stresses being able to connect individual experiences and societal relationships. Mills asserts that a critical task for social scientists is to “translate private troubles into public issues.”

Think of a problem that impacts you personally (e.g., the high cost of tuition, unemployment, divorce) and explain how you would make sense of it differently if you viewed through the lens of the Sociological Imagination. Use Mills’ theory to explain your chosen social problem, define your issue in terms of

(a) a personal problem

(b) a public issue

(c) and draw connections between the two
